Chapter 7 — Face to Face
The meeting was scheduled for nine o'clock precisely in the primary conference room of the Meridian Stone building.
Gerald Hargrove had never been a man who enjoyed traveling to someone else's territory for a high-stakes corporate negotiation.
For thirty years, he had operated on the strict principle that making the other party come to you established immediate dominance.
Today, however, the sudden and critical supply chain crisis with Alderton Metals had forced his hand entirely.
Ryan sat at the head of the long glass table, waiting patiently as the heavy double doors swung open.
Gerald walked into the room wearing his signature bespoke charcoal suit, projecting an aura of absolute authority.
Then Gerald stopped completely dead in his tracks, his polished leather shoes freezing on the expensive carpet.
He stared at the man sitting comfortably at the head of the table, his brain struggling to process the impossible visual information.
"You," Gerald breathed, the single word slipping out before his formidable corporate discipline could catch it.
"Hello, Gerald," Ryan said, his voice smooth, professional, and entirely devoid of the deference he had once shown this man.
"Please, take a seat so we can begin discussing the future of your company's supply chain."
Gerald's face hardened as he slowly lowered himself into the chair opposite Ryan, his mind racing to adapt to the shock.
"This is an elaborate trick," Gerald said, his voice dropping into the dangerous, threatening register he used to intimidate rivals.
"You actually think you can put on a nice suit, hide behind a fake company, and play in the big leagues?"
"I am not playing, Gerald," Ryan replied smoothly, folding his hands together on the pristine glass surface of the table.
"I am sitting here holding the absolute controlling influence over twenty-three percent of your active construction material supply."
Gerald sneered, leaning forward aggressively to project his power across the physical space separating them.
"You are way out of your depth, Ryan. Brendan has already uncovered your little alias and the private fund backing you."
"We have a battery of corporate lawyers drafting injunctions right now that will completely freeze your holding company by noon."
"You are going to walk away from Alderton Metals, or I will personally ensure you are ruined for a second time."
Ryan didn't blink, didn't flinch, and didn't break eye contact with the man who had spent five years treating him like dirt.
Instead, Ryan reached into his leather briefcase and pulled out a thick, legally binding document bound in dark blue paper.
He slid the heavy document across the smooth glass table until it came to a gentle stop directly in front of Gerald's hands.
"I strongly suggest you read the second page before you continue threatening me with your legal department," Ryan said quietly.
Gerald glared at him, then snatched the document off the table and flipped roughly to the second page.
Ryan watched with deep, quiet satisfaction as all the color rapidly drained out of his former father-in-law's face.
"You see, Gerald, while Brendan was busy investigating Meridian Stone Partners, he missed our secondary acquisition vehicle entirely."
"I don't just control your raw material supply chain through Alderton Metals anymore."
"As of nine o'clock yesterday morning, I have successfully acquired thirty-four percent of Hargrove Group's outstanding external shares."
"I am now the single largest external shareholder of the company you have spent your entire life building."
Gerald's hands began to tremble slightly as he stared blindly at the irrefutable legal signatures on the document in front of him.
"What exactly do you want from me?" Gerald choked out, the arrogant bluster completely stripped from his voice.
"I want absolutely nothing from you, Gerald, because I already own everything I came here for," Ryan said.
"This meeting wasn't a negotiation. It was simply a professional courtesy to let you know your era is over."
Ryan stood up from the table, buttoned his tailored suit jacket, and looked down at the ruined man in the chair.
"You know the way out," Ryan said, turning his back on Gerald and walking steadily toward the heavy double doors.
As he stepped into the hallway, his phone vibrated with an urgent security alert from Victor's financial monitoring team.
Brendan was actively attempting to transfer millions in liquid company assets to an offshore account in a total panic.
Ryan smiled grimly as he tapped a single button on his encrypted phone, instantly authorizing the bank to freeze the transfer.
Every single exit the Hargrove family had left was now securely boarded up and heavily bolted shut.
The final collapse was ready to begin.
